Summer term
Welcome back to the final term of the year. Our topic this term is survival. Please find the topic web and class letter on the class 1 home page.
This week we have been looking at stories about families. We have then had a go at describing our families and did a very good job! Take a look at some of them below.

Topic
In topic this week we have been looking at the life cycle of a human, frog and butterfly. Thank you for your photo contributions, our human life cycle is now up on display so feel free to come and have a look. It's not too late to add more photos if you have them.
Thanks to Mrs Mead (no thanks to Miss Allen who was elbow deep in bond water and still couldn't catch any) we have some tadpoles to look after in the classroom and we are excited to watch them grow and change.

FEELING cHILLY
Class 1 and 2 had a visit from somebody who had travelled far from home. Throughout the school we found footprints leading to some clues and finally a post card. The children were very clever and worked out the postcard had been left by a penguin who had traveled from ANTARTICA.
Since then we have found some interesting facts out about Antartica. Maybe you could ask the children if they can remember any?
Following this was our school trip to @Bristol. The children were a pleasure to take out and made the school proud. As well as enjoying the exhibits around the center we also took part in a GoExplore! workshop. The children had a chance to look at some amazing artifacts from different continents around the world which helped us with our learning about different climates.
Pictures to come!
In literacy we have been practicing our story telling. We have been working in groups to act out traditional fairy tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood. We are getting really good at using story language and different voices for each character.
It would be lovely if you could tell some of these stories to somebody at home! Maybe they could film or record you telling the story and upload it to tapestry if you are in reception or email them in to [email protected]

dEN BUILDING
What a fantastic morning we had today!
Class 1 and 2 ventured up to the Monument for some den building. In our topic work we have been looking at extreme weather such as flooding, tornados, blizzards and our task was to build a strong shelter to keep us safe. This activity was a brilliant opportunity to apply many of the skills that we learn within the classroom. The children worked in groups of 6 or 7 children of mixed ages.
We saw some fantastic team work going on and we were certainly practicing our negotiating skills as the groups decided on the best place to base their den, the best way to build an initial structure and then some got as far as designing doorbells and chandeliers.
The outdoors gave the children an opportunity to design and make with a range of materials that are not available in the classroom and on a much larger scale. As well as developing children's physical skills of carrying larger items, negotiating uneven surfaces and climbing steep..... and seemingly never ending hills.
The children were a pleasure to take out and most showed great resilience to the weather and tired legs. Well done class 1 and 2.
Thank you so much to our parent volunteers - without you these learning opportunities couldn't happen!
If you feel like in the future you would like to help on an outing (some will be indoors!) please speak to Mrs Todhunter about getting a DBS check form, this way you will be fully registered when the time comes.

WC 2.2.15
This week in our topic work we have been becoming weather reporters. In order to do this we have had to learn to find the four countries of the United Kingdom on the map and we are beginning to learn the names of some of the capital cities too! We used the directional language North, East, South and West to make sure our reports were really precise. Check back soon to see our year 1 weather forecast videos.
Here is a nice game to reinforce the countries and capital cities http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/barnabybear/games/weather_report.shtml
Maybe you could make a weather forecast video at home? We would love to see it.
Please remember we have a number of travelling bears that love to visit places with you. Sharing where you have taken our bears is a great way to open up discussions about different places within the UK or even further a field.

sPRING TERM
It's hard to believe we are in to the Spring term with the current weather, however, we have definitely had some great weather to study for our Spring term topic.
Year 1 are now swimming on a Monday, it helps if children wear clothes they find easy to change in and out of.
Don't forget to check the Reception or year 1 tab under the 'class 1' menu to find out what we have been doing in literacy and maths and how you can support at home.

Christmas is well and truly on it's way and Nativity rehearsals are well underway - rumor has it there may be some strange visitors to this year's nativity story!
On Monday 10th Miss Wright and I held a reading meeting. Thank you to all who attended we hope you found it useful. If you weren't able to attend all of the handouts were sent home in book bags and the power point used in the meeting can be found on the class 1 webpage under the tab 'reading meeting'.
As requested I have also added a link to a video showing the proper pronunciation for each of the phonemes.
On Monday Year 1 and 2 were lucky enough to have a visit from Mr Huxley-Reynard who held a session on electricity - the children were then set the tricky task of designing and making a burglar alarm to protect a painting - just like the ones we were told about at the art gallery! We really appreciate help from parents who have a specialty linked to our topics so don't forget to let us know if you feel you have a talent or skill that could help!

What a busy week we have had!
On Monday we were lucky enough to have a visit from 2 people to teach us about the story of Diwali following our class 1 and 2 day on Diwali. We had lots of fun dressing up as characters of the story including; Raman, Sita, Hanuman. Some of us had a go at playing some Indian drums - it was lots of fun. (Photos to follow)
On Wednesday year 1 visited Victoria Art Gallery in Bath. During our visit we took part in two workshops.
Firstly we took a trip back in time and had an art lesson taught by a man called William Harbutt - the inventor of plasticine! Children thoroughly enjoyed learning about his life and making their own models.

After lunch we took part in a workshop all about portraits. We took some time viewing different types of portraits around the gallery including work from Picasso, Andy Warhol and Dali. We then took these ideas and had a go at creating our own self portraits using the style of one of the artists. We were very impressed with how carefully the children concentrated on the finer details.
While the Year 1's were away Reception were extremely busy learning about the creation story with Mr Batchelor!
Welcome to Class 1 2014-15!
What a fantastic first half term! We are so impressed with how well the reception children have settled into school ! It's as if they have always been here. They are making new friends, exploring the class room and resources and embracing the new learning opportunities! A big welcome back to class 1 year ones who have come back enthusiastically ready for the next stage of their school life!
Thank you so much for supporting your child in settling into school life, organising themselves in the morning and in making the transition so successful.
Our big question this term is.....
Why is Vincent Van Gogh famous?
Below you can find our topic web for the Autumn term which outlines some of the things we will be learning.
Both Reception and Year 1 have experimented with creating their own versions of Vincent Van Gogh's work. Reception learnt a lot about colour mixing, and managing the paints and Year 1 worked with Class 2 using acrylic paints.
In the last week of term, Class 1 and 2 celebrated Diwali together. Firstly we learnt about the story of Diwali and Rama and Sita.
We made Diva lamps, Mehndi patterns, Rangoli sand patterns and also created a whole Reception, Year1 and Year 2 Rangoli pattern using coloured rice. Some children even tried to make Diwali sweets for Class 1 and 2.

Some useful information
The school runs on a Week A/ Week B cycle. The week beginning 1.9.14 was week A.
On week A we have P.E on a Wednesday and Thursday and week B Thursday. Please ensure P.E kits are kept in school on the children's pegs. Please help children by tying back long hair on these days.
Children will need a pair of shorts as well as a pair of long trousers and a jumper as part of their P.E kit.
It is extremely useful if all PE kit is clearly labelled including shoes!
Please check back for updates!
