BREAKING NEWS!
We have now learnt all of the Phase 2 and Phase 3 sounds! We are well on our way to being confident readers and writers. Well done reception you have worked so hard! Some of the final sounds we learnt are quite tricky (er, air, ure) so please continue to practice these with flashcards at home.
We should also be able to read the below tricky words
I, no, go, to, the, he, she, me, be, my, you, her, they, all, you.
Maths
In maths this week we have been experimenting with weight, using spring balances and bucket balances. We found it interesting to that when talking about weight, the size of the object doesn't matter.

Phonics - This week we learnt the sounds ur, ow, oi we have been practicing writing words with these sounds in and we are beginning to be able to write a simple sentence including these.
We have also been focusing on spelling tricky words - I, no, the, go, he, me, she, be and reading the words I, no, go, to, the, he, she, me, be, my, you - if you are looking for extra things to do at home you could practice these but make sure you keep it fun!
Maths
In maths over the past two weeks we have been doing simple addition. The children have really enjoyed using the 'adding machine' during their choosing time which is fantastic to see! Well done Reception.
We have also been looking closely at and recreating repeating patterns - this is something we really enjoyed doing and would be fun to do at home - but if you do please bring them in or add a photo to the online learning journey.
For example you could start a repeating pattern using finger paints and ask your child to continue the pattern or add the next two colours alternatively you could use stickers, stamps or vegetable prints in paint!
Easier red, blue, green, red, blue, green, red, blue, green or square, circle, square, circle
Harder red, blue, blue, green, red, blue, blue, green red or carrot carrot, potato, apple, carrot, carrot, potato, apple

Phonics
Since the beginning of term we have been continuing to learn phase 3 sounds. You should have all of the below sounds in your tin to help you practice them at home. If any are missing write a note and we can find a spare. Some tins are getting very full so you could take out the phase 2 sounds as long as you practice them sometimes at home.
i, w, v, x, y, qu, ch, ch, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or - please help children to spot these in their reading books. It's worth asking children to spot them before they start reading the page so that when they do read the sentence they read them as a digraph (1 single sound) rather than two separate sounds. e.g 'can you find the sound that makes oa?' The goat is big.
Some tins are getting very full so you could take out the phase 2 sounds as long as you practice them sometimes at home.
Just a reminder that you can find some useful interactive games on this link, these can be particularly useful if you are struggling with reading motivation at home as the children love them!

Maths
Since being back after Christmas we have done some work on 2d shapes. Many children are still unsure of the names of regular 2d shapes such as circle, square, rectangle and triangle - why not go on a shape hunt around your house, the supermarket or on a walk to help reinforce these?
This week we have been working on addition - mostly adding 1 or 2 more to a number by counting on.

PHASE 3!
This week in phonics we have started phase 3! We learnt the sounds j,v, w and we practiced reading the tricky words no,go,to,the.
During phase 3 we continue to work upon children's blending skills and it is important that you continue to read the phase 2 sounds so that children get really fast at them.
Maths
This week we have been going shape mad! We have been playing lots of games to help us recognise common 2d shapes and be able to talk about their features such as the number of corners or whether it has straight or curved sides.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/maths/shapes/play/popup.shtml - This is a great game to consolidate what we have been learning at home!

This week in phonics we spent some time practicing our blending and consolidating what we have learnt in Phase 2 and we are ready to move on to Phase 3.
We have so far learnt s,a,t,p,i,n,m,n,d,g,o,c,k,ck,e,u,r,h,f,l,ll,ss - please check your child has all these sounds in their tin. If any are missing it would be helpful if you could leave a note in their reading diary.
It is great that children are spending time practicing their 'word wall' words at home and are getting really fast at recognising them. If your child is finding these easy it is also really useful if children are able to spell these words too - but keep any practice fun, perhaps have a go at making them with sound cards or magnetic letters.
We are still working hard at forming our letters correctly, the earlier children pick up the correct pattern the easier they find writing. Children really enjoy writing them in the rice at school during their choosing time and know to use a finger writing booklet to remind them of the correct pattern. This can be done at home using anything from sand, shaving foam to tomato ketchup but is extremely beneficial to children.
Maths
This week we have been working on comparing and ordering numbers. We have played lots of fun games to help us learn this and have been using a number line to help us to identify which is the biggest/smallest of 3 numbers to either 10 or 20.
Quickly recognising the numbers 1-20 makes this much easier and is an important maths milestone to work on.

In phonics this week we have learnt the sounds; e,u,r,h,f and the tricky words to, the, no, I and go. Tricky words are words which can't be phonetically sounded out and we just have to practice! Can you be a reading investigator and spot these words in your home reading book?
Maths
In maths this week we have been learning about length by ordering 3 different objects and using the language of shortest and longest. Some of us have started to measure objects using cubes. The best way to practice these skills is in a practical way - can you order your teddies in order of height or your family? (parents can help by reinforcing mathematical language rather than bigger/smaller) Maybe you could take a photo for your gallery? Or upload one to your learning journey.

Phonics - Phase 2
Reading
Reception are continuing to learn their phase 2 sounds and have so far learnt;
s,a,t,p,i,n,m,d,g,o,c,k,ck
Please continue to practice these sounds at home even when your child is confident with them, as we learn new sounds some of the old ones can get forgotten. Any practice at home of words from the 'word wall' is very beneficial.
Below is a link to some great games for practicing blending, can you play them with someone at home? You may want to ask a grown up to sound out the words in a robot voice and see if you can blend the sounds together to make a word.

Writing
This week we have been practicing writing the 'curly caterpillar' letters... s, a, d, g, o, c we have already been practicing sitting our letters on the line. Can you show a grown up how to write some of these letters using your finger writing book?
Maths
Our current focus in maths is recognising numbers and matching numerals to the correct amount of objects or actions! This is something that you may want to practice at home by playing games such as Pelmanism (matching pairs of cards) rolling a dice and collecting the correct amount of teddies, dolls or figures to join you at a tea party, or playing action games like Simon says (Simon says jump 7 times). Below I have added some links to some games you may find useful.
Please remember that these activities are optional and are for consolidation - I recommend you start with numbers 1-10 and move on when your child is confident!
