WC 9.2.15
In literacy our current literacy unit we have been looking at fairy tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding hood. We have been taking the time to listen to lots of different versions of the stories to help us make up our own. This has been a great unit which has included lots of acting out of stories which the year 1's are getting really great at. If you have any strange versions of these traditional tails please bring them in!

Literacy
As promised last week this weeks Literacy lessons have focused on instructions. Unsurprisingly we have been very good at this! Our year 1's have been trying out their instructional skills by writing and reading instructions for a class game of Simon says among other things. We have been identifying the 'bossy verbs' in instructions and we have also started talking about adding in adverbs.
Maths
Last week we were busy learning how to spend our pocket money. We were finding different ways of making amounts to 20.
Here is a lovely game to practice these skills http://www.ictgames.com/payForIt/index.html but nothing beats using real coins and paying for things in the shop!

Maths
This term we have already been really busy, we have been doing lots of work on 10 more and 10 less - thank you for your help with completing homework to support this as it was something we found hard but I think we've finally got it.
Last week we had a real challenge in our maths and were adding together 3 numbers. We used our mental maths skills to find 'quick pairs' within the three numbers (such as doubles or pairs to 10) and then counted on the third number.
e.g 6+3+4=13 we knew straight away that 6 and 4 is 10 so then we just needed to add on the 3.
This week we have been working with money, recongising coins to £1 and also understanding how much these are worth. The children really enjoyed playing a game called swap - I will give you instructions for this and if you have enough change or some pretend money you can give it a go. Alternatively set up a shop and practice paying for thing with the correct amount.
Swap.
Roll a dice. Pick up that many 1p coins - eg if you roll a 6 pick up 6 coins.
Roll again, and pick up however many more coins the dice says.
Count your pennies, can you swap them for a coin worth the same amount? (The aim of the game is to have the most money with the least amount of coins) e.g if you had 6 1 penny coins you could swap it for 3 2 penny coins and you would still have the same amount.
Roll the dice again and pick up the right number of 1p coins - can you do any swaps?
Continue to do this swapping with 5p coins, 10p coins, 20p coins and 50p coins.
Literacy
For the first part of this term we have been writing our own version of where the wild things are. The children are looking forward to you reading them at parents evening.
Next in literacy we will be looking at instructions and how to write them - so be prepared to be bossed around!

This week we have been going shape mad! We have been playing lots of games to help us recognise common 2d shapes and be able to talk about their features such as the number of corners or whether it has straight or curved sides. This also developed our ability to use simple tables to display data.

This week we finished our Handa's Suprise UK style stories - the children worked really hard on them so feel free to pop in and have a read!

This week we started off looking at odd and even numbers using some yummy sweets and smelly socks. We looked at how even numbers would make up equal pairs and odd numbers would have one left over, or an even number of objects can be equally shared between 2. This then led on to doubling and halving numbers. We need to get really fast at doubling numbers to 10 so this is something you can practice at home.
We then finished the week looking at the days of the week and months of the year. Can you remember the correct order for the months of the year? Can you find or make up a song to help you remember them?
In mental maths we have been counting back from 100 and identifying 1 more or 1 less than numbers to 100 - we still find it quite difficult. We enjoy using the splat square to splat a number and then remembering to move 1 left for 1 less and 1 right for 1 more.

This week we started planning and writing our own Handa's surprise story - with a difference! We looked carefully at the setting of Handa's surprise and wondered how the story would change if it was set in Britain.

This week in maths we have been very busy! We have been practicing counting in 10's as well as halving shapes. Next week we will be moving on to doubling and halving numbers.
Can you show someone at home how you can count in 10's at home? Here's a game to remind you - click on sequencing, counting in multiples and then multiples of 10 to 100.

Or pehaps you want to practice your halving skills - can you find anything tasty to half? This is a great one to practice practically, involve your children in discussions about halving not only objects but filling 'half' of containers of different sizes.
Literacy
This week in Literacy we have been reading the story 'Bears in the night' and we had a go at writing our own version including 'Class 1 in the night' creeping around North Nibley school.

This week we have been learning about ordering numbers. We have been placing numbers in the correct place on a number line, thinking about which number is bigger or smaller and finding numbers that fall between two given numbers. We found this last bit quite tricky.... below are some links to some games that you may want to play at home to show someone what you have been learning.

All year 1's would benefit from practicing writing numbers to 20!
Please remember these games are to help consolidate children's learning so I suggest starting with numbers to 20 and then increasing if the challenge isn't hard enough! Have fun!

In literacy over the next few weeks we will be looks at stories with repeating patterns in, and having a go at writing our own!
